Overview
Sponges are among the simplest of animals. Similarly to corals, they are sessile and form body structures for specialized cells, called choanocytes, that generate a water current through it allowing them to filter feed. The structure of the sponge is made out of spongin and spicules, which often get preserved as fossils. Sponges lack body symmetry, cellular organization, and have no true tissues.
